Five years ago, my husband and I took a trip to Ireland where we spent three wonderful weeks traveling the country. It was there that my passion for the “brown stuff” was born, both in the morning (tea) and in the evening (Guinness). I really could not see myself opening a Guinness bar, so I started to think about opening a teahouse.
Upon returning from Ireland, I began my search for good tea. I was able to find the Irish Breakfast tea bags to which I had become accustomed but after extensive research, I realized that my interest in finding good quality loose-leaf tea was just beginning. I wanted to bring the excitement I felt to Milwaukee and share my passion for tea and its health benefits through educating the community.
I became a member of the Specialty Tea Institute and attended the World Tea Expo in Las Vegas in 2006. I furthered my knowledge in tea by completing the Specialty Tea Institute's Level I and Level II certification classes in New York. From that time on, the plan to open a teahouse began to take shape. Brew City Tea House was established and found its home in a residential area of what was once the “Warehouse District” of the Third Ward. Like so many businesses, unfortunately, Brew City Tea fell victim to a disabling economy. Milwaukee's first all-tea establishment closed its doors.
The fact that I was able to build a tea community of friends and customers who share a common bond of taste and conversation helped me realize my dream. Brew City Tea, a place where you can enjoy a good brew and where everybody knows your name. It was as good as sharing a pint of Guinness. The doors on Jefferson Street have closed, but Brew City Tea still grows. With that in mind, I am working on a means to continue offering the quality loose-leaf tea so many of you have enjoyed.
I am building an online tea community and encourage you to join me in learning more about tea, it's customs, traditions and diversity. “ Reading the Tea Leaf ” is our new online blogging tea community. If you have never blogged before, now is the time. I invite you to share information, ideas, and comments relating to tea. Brew City Tea House has moved from Jefferson Street to your home.
The kettle is on, bring a friend and start sipping.
